Two Pols Who Get It

Two politicians in Delaware get it. Rather than "make everyone insured," we should make health care affordable.

In Delaware, Judge Bill Lee and state Sen. Charlie Copeland are running for the office of governor and lieutenant governor, respectively. They would, among other things, let state residents purchase insurance from other states. That approach would let consumers choose whether they want a tightly regulated, high-cost, high-benefit plan, or one that is cheaper. The also want to see mandate-free (or at least mandate-lite) policies sold in the state.

These are useful steps towards helping people making financial arrangements that suit them rather than special interest groups and politicians.

(This story is a great example of my point from yesterday: Despite all the discussion of health care from a national perspective, there's also some interesting discussions going on at the state level.)
