Small is Beautiful

I'll admit that the consumer experience in general isn't always satisfactory. And when it comes to the health care system, sure, it's easy to feel the outrage--which prompts the desire to "do something."

I suspect that the level of dissatisfaction of any experience is tied to the degree to which a person feels trapped. Don't like McDonald's? Walk across the street to Burger King. Don't like your health insurance plan? .... There's a good chance that you're stuck, at least if you want to keep your job.

And if health care is taken over by government ... well, there's no escape even by changing jobs.

The best alternative to government-run health care isn't what we have now. It's to make the market for health care more fragmented, open, and competitive.
