The Latest on the Uninsured

The mainstream media is reporting this in a disturbing way. Even my favorite, the Wall Street Journal, carried the headline "Number of Uninsured Fell in '07, Census Says." However, most of the decline is caused by expanded Medicaid and SCHIP enrolment: 2.7 million more Americans dependent on government for their health care. John Holahan of the Urban Institute points out that Massachusetts' (amazingly expensive) expansion of government programs accounts for one quarter of this increase.

Look: if people lose their jobs, do we count them as "employed" if they go on welfare, and "unemployed" only if they fail to apply/qualify for welfare?

I do not think that this CPS report is good news for those of us who favor individual ownership of health care.
