Has the Autism Mandate Avalanche Hit A Roadblock?

OK. The Pennsylvania Cost Containment Council's report, "Autism Spectrum Disorders Mandated Benefits Review Panel Report: Evidence Submitted Concerning Pennsylvania HB 1150" of June 18, 2008 (http://tinyurl.com/5dlogj), cites Peele, PB, "Exclusions and limitations in children's behavioral health care coverage," Psychiatric Services 53:591-594 (May 2002) which reviewed 1996 data. Of 128 health plans, 46 excluded autism treatment. That's 64% coverage twelve years ago. If autism treatment is successful, surely the rate of coverage is higher today. John Donovan's ABC News report of March 24, 2008 (http://tinyurl.com/5h6klt) stated that "mandated insurance coverage for autism treatment is, generally, nothing new .... What's new is requiring coverage for ABA therapy."

Milt Freudenheim of the New York Times wrote (http://tinyurl.com/5t85tm) on December 21, 2004, that health plans resist paying for ABA, but not other therapies: "A diagnosis for autism is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association. Treatment of some kind for most disorders in the manual is covered by health plans."

Thanks for the effort, nevertheless!
(Note: this is a specific, new, treatment, not autism treatment that health plans already cover.)

Note: Please provide evidence of your claim that "autism treatment is covered by health plans." The fact is that autism treatment of any kind is rarely covered by health plans.

Second Note: This "new" treatment (I'm assuming you mean ABA ...)you allude to has thousands of studies proving its efficacy over the last twenty years. It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the U.S. Surgeon General.

Third note: The cost would not be $36,000 per patient. It would be that at most, and would be much less for many.

I know this is just a blog, but perhaps you should spend a bit more time researching your topic prior to hitting the publish button.

In this case, you got it completely wrong.
