I don't know if the "midwife folks" can be characterized into one group, and certainly I agree that some people are too pro-midwife, but I think your statements about women just needing to educate them to talk to their doctors is not accurate either. Most doctors that I have run into are not interested in most opinions that some woman wants to tell him, but just fit you into the machine and out pops the baby, on time, or by cesarean if the baby has the gall to wait around a day or two.
I think most "midwife folks" would be thrilled if there was freedom in this country for people to make their own choices.
I agree with your analysis 100%. Midwives should be free to practice, but it seems the pro-midwife side is more concerned about attacking doctors than promoting freedom. Midwives are fine for some, but I think their advocates tend to oversell their services as a cure-all. They remind me a bit of the Kevin Trudeau guy who hawks his "Health Cures They Don't Want you to Know" on late-night infomercials.
I don't know how much of an ally for freedom the midwife folks will be, since I get the impression that if they had the power they would mandate everyone use midwives.
