Good News for Once

Greg Scandlen, who works out of The Heartland Institute and serves as director of its Consumers for Health Care Choices project, occasionally writes on this blog. He also puts out an informative newsletter each month.

This month's issue includes some news "worthy of banner headlines," which he attributes to the rise of consumer-driven health care.

The significant costs of health insurance are mentioned, as well. Here are the average annual premium s for a family policy, sorted by cost and arranged by type of policy:

  • HMO -- $13,122
  • PPO -- $12,937
  • POS -- $12,330
  • HRA -- $11,571
  • HSA -- $9,101

Clearly, there's a lot of work to do to make insurance--and more importantly, health care--more affordable. As an interesting side note: I thought HMOs were supposed to save money?
