DC to Mandate Sick Time

Beginning of a national trend?

By Marc Kilmer

Washington, D.C., is likely to approve legislation mandating that all companies provide paid sick leave for employees. Many bills imposing this type of mandate on businesses exempt small companies, but not D.C. Even a business employing one person would be forced to give that person paid sick leave.

This seems to be the beginning of a national push for mandated sick time. Ohio unions are trying to put the issue on the ballot for the 2008 election and I am sure there are efforts in other states. It seems that free market advocates have yet another battle to fight.
